As they went, Shianni relaxed slightly, thinking that perhaps this was not as laboring as she had originally thought it would be.

When they had a list, they began to delve into name meanings. Rowan knew his own, of course, and supplied the meaning of his surname, though he didn't especially need the first or middle names to match. That extra knowledge immediately struck another handful of names from the list, including some she had been uncertain about before.

Shianni eyed the list and marked through one name. A moment later she wrote out a name in the last bit of space below and glanced over at Rowan to see if he approved. However, before she could get more than a slight look of approval, a wave of pain gripped her and she groaned, the quill slipping from her fingers. It had begun.

Rowan's smile faded into concern, and their parchment notes found themselves abandoned on the coffee table. Are you all right? nearly slipped from him, but no, she obviously was not. "Is it Braxton Hicks again?" She needed water, or to lie down, but no, this looked far worse than that.

Shianni winced and shook her head, though the pain subsided after a moment. "No, no, I think it's time," she said. "We should get the healer." It was early, but she knew the baby would survive at this stage if all went well. She closed her eyes briefly and took a deep breath. She was unsure if fear or relief was the strongest feeling flowing through her.

Rowan was tense and distracted all the way to the Hospital Wing. Every time a stop was necessary, it was all he could do to recall the classes they'd taken. It looked more and more like they wouldn't be inducing labor at a hospital on her due date. The baby was viable, he reminded her. There was no reason why it shouldn't be perfectly healthy.
Somehow they arrived with no mishaps, and by the time Abigail was fluttering around them and Shianni's personal Healer had been summoned, Rowan was coaching her. "Breathe," he reminded her, keeping his voice as calm as he could manage. "Save your energy." Look at me, don't watch the Healer.

"You are most definitely having this baby!" Abigail said, holding her wand over her patient's abdomen. Her eyebrows creased, and her smile faded.
"Ah, is there anyone else you would like me to notify?" she asked. Please let the other Healer arrive soon! she thought. She was going to need help with this one!

Shianni winced again and shook her head. Quite honestly she did not care to have anyone here, they could be informed once the ordeal was over with. For all she knew, her mother would force her way in and insist on taking Rowan's place. For once craving a physical connection, she grasped Rowan's hand.

Rowan shook his head, too. "I'll contact our parents later," he said. He realized that Shianni would rather not have her controlling mother here, and as for his father, the man wouldn't be interested until the baby was born.
He looked hard at Abigail a moment before turning his attention to distracting Shianni. He didn't like that pained concentration on the woman's face. He wanted very much to know what she was thinking, if there was something wrong, but Shianni was worried enough without giving her legitimate fears as well.
"Is there anything I should be doing?" he asked instead.

"Oh, ah... no, Mr. Trace. Just keep coaching your wife. I'll take care of everything!" Abigail began a series of spells to help the distressed baby. She didn't like the issues with its heart rate, and it needed more blood flow. She wasn't experienced enough with childbirth problems to know how to fix this problem.

Rowan knew too many spells, charms, and the like not to pick up on what Abigail was doing. He helped Shianni through her next contraction, then gave her a reassuring smile before pulling away and approaching the Healer.
"What are the blood replenishing spells for?" he asked softly. "There's nothing wrong, is there?" That last had more than a hint of annoyance to it.

"I truly wish that I could answer no, Mr. Trace, but there are indeed problems. I am working diligently toward a solution, so if you would please return to your wife, I will continue my work." Abigail had a great deal of respect for all the professors at Hogwarts, but she needed her concentration.
