Matthew shook his head. "No, no, he won't get with Rowan. Once Rowan got married to that woman they were done, doesn't matter what the hell Keith thought." He thought for a moment, weighing his options and his thoughts, before speaking again. "Now don't get pissy with me, I can't say what I want to say without mentioning this. When me and him were together he broke down one day. He said he was afraid he didn't know who he was. He was convinced that he is who he is because of Skylar, that maybe he'd have liked different things or whatever if he hadn't met him.
"I think that that's what he's been doing this summer, trying to figure out who he is. I don't think he's doing it right. Going out and finding a different guy every week to go home with isn't gonna help him, you know? He thinks I don't know what he's been up to." If he hadn't been so preoccupied with Rhys, maybe Matthew would have been able to help Keith.

Lyric's jaw tensed, and he kept his gaze away from Matthew, looking unseeing into the room. "He won't talk to me," he said. "There's no relationship and there's never gonna be one." And Keith was f~ing a different guy every week, and coming to him a couple times a month for what? Out of pity? It pissed him off to think of.
He looked at Matthew again, eyes hard and unforgiving. "We just f~," he said. "He wouldn't even get near me if he didn't feel sorry for some sob story I told him. I tell him sh~ and he tells me nothing. We're not even f~ing friends."

"I told you, he's protecting himself, that's all there is to it," Matthew said. "Don't get pissy at me because Keith's an immature arse half the time." It didn't feel right to be the one calling Keith immature. Hadn't Matthew always been the member of the group that refused to grow up? He flicked a glance toward the door that led upstairs. Well, meeting Rhys had caused both of them to change. "He mentioned Skylar, right? That's a start. Talk to him about it. I mean, if he get pissed because you know, he'll get pissed at me, not you."

"He won't talk about it," Lyric said. And he wasn't pissed off at Matthew anyway, he was pissed at himself for getting his damn hopes up. He was pissed at himself because he'd f~ed himself over so badly that the best he could do was cling to someone who didn't want him. He pushed to his feet. "I shouldn't have come here," he said. "It's not you, I'm not pissed at you, don't worry about it." He reached for his trench. Maybe he'd go home after all.

Matthew stood, too. "Listen, Keith's worth fighting for. He's got issues and he can be a self-centered ass sometimes, but he's got a good heart. Sometimes you have to fight, you gotta push a little and be stubborn." He knew Keith, he knew how the man worked and thought, more or less. He also knew how his relationship with Rhys had gone. There hadn't been much pushing and fighting, but there had been times where one of them had needed to do it.

Lyric looked at Matthew with drawn brows. "You don't get it," he said. "Keith's so much f~ing better than me it's not funny. I'd just f~ing drag him down. I'm a charity case, he deserves better." It wasn't about whether or not Keith was worth fighting for. Yeah, he was worth fighting for, but Lyric liked him too much to worm his way in and be another jerk on his list.

"Keith doesn't do charity," Matthew said. "He's got to like you, or he wouldn't have been f~ing you since New Years'. He's not better than anyone else. If you're interested in him, really interested, maybe you'll have to wait, maybe you'll have to be patient and deal with him while he sorts his s~ out. Being his friend while he's doing that will say more to him than going out and beating on his ex." He might not have supported this whole idea if he didn't worry about Keith living the way he was now. He knew Keith, he knew that when Keith liked someone it was usually obvious after the first or second meeting. He also knew that people changed.

"I'm trying!" Lyric shouted. "You think I've got any f~ing clue what I'm doing? All I know is someone hurts, you take care of it, I was just gonna f~ing take care of it." Here this guy was, giving him advice like he meant anything to Keith. Hell yes, he was a charity case. So he was a good f~ too, apparently not as good as he thought if Keith was out screwing everything with a pulse and maybe asked him out once or twice a month.
He'd been waiting, he'd been dealing, and he'd been more patient than he'd ever been for anything, and it pissed him off being told to do basic sh~ he'd done from the start. He wasn't normal, he'd never be anything but broken, and it didn't matter if he was interested. It never mattered, all that mattered was how long he could hold out before he f~ed up again.
"You think I'm so f~ing good for Keith, go grab a f~ing Cauldron and you'll change your mind." He grabbed his trench and turned to leave.

"Don't yell at me in my own shop," Matthew said. "Relationships aren't f~ing easy. When there's baggage it's harder. If you want to give up, then give up, but you'll spend the rest of your life regretting it. I don't give a damn what you've done in the past. Keith trusts you." That was good enough for him until Trent proved otherwise. So far, the man had just been a good, constant companion for Keith.

That didn't make any sense at all to Lyric, and though he'd have loved to yell back just to prove a point, he stormed out the door instead. They didn't have a relationship, how many times did he have to say that? He hadn't said sh~ about giving up, either. He didn't know what the guy was on that he was spewing stuff like that, but it was bullsh~. He was out of here.

Matthew stared after the man, then shook his head and turned to head upstairs for a moment. The girl behind the counter averted her eyes as he walked past. He scribbled a note on the first piece of parchment he found and sent it off to Keith by his small owl. You need to talk to Trent. He paused long enough to give a brief explanation to Rhys, then headed back downstairs.
