"I haven't seen my parents in five years," Rhys said, glancing into a room as they passed. The only contact he had with his family was an aunt that had reached out to him some months after he left home. Some part of him hoped that someday he would be able to make amends with his parents, but so far that day hadn't come. "But I have Matthew, I guess I can't complain too much." It just took a firm upper lip and a little lying to himself to be okay.

"Yeah," Dare said, though he saw through it as well as Rhys did. "Hey, next time Michael and I get everyone together, you've got to come along. You can even bring Matthew if you want." He gave a teasing smile at that. "Our anniversary's coming up and we'll be doing something for that, probably go clubbing."

"That'd be cool," Rhys said. He always loved going out with Matthew and adding a group of friends to the mix was even better. "How long did you say you've been together?" he asked. He couldn't ignore the feeling he had gotten that there was something off about their relationship, but the few things Dare had said today made him reevaluate.

"It'll be our third anniversary at the end of June, so almost four years," Dare said. "It didn't feel like rushing into things then, but now..." He probably shouldn't be talking about that. He shrugged. "We get into a funk sometimes, and it works itself out. Then we'll be back to sickening and confusing our friends again."

"I heard some girl say that true love is falling in love over and over again or something like that," Rhys said. It sounded horribly cheesy and like something someone would tell themselves when a relationship wouldn't work. He shrugged, "Good luck with Michael this time, you were saying you were having some issues."

Dare nodded, but didn't say anything more on the subject. He'd done his venting, and for now he didn't want to think about it. He was out of the school, doing something because he wanted to, regardless of what Michael thought. He realized his husband didn't have any objections, but he still carried that feeling that it was supposed to be him and Michael against the world, and it wasn't anymore. "This is one long-ass hallway," he pointed out.

Rhys smiled at that and shrugged. "This place wasn't built to be a shelter, so some of it looks weird. The dining area is all along the other end through here," he took a couple of steps and pushed open a door at the end of the hallway. To the left was the food and stretching out for the length of the building were various tables and chairs. "Forgot for a second I was supposed to be being helpful and giving you a tour."

"I don't mind," Dare said with a shrug. He looked into the dining area and got an odd flash of the room he'd eaten in during his short time in Muggle school. What had it been called? Cafe came to mind, but he knew that wasn't it. "You know, I went to Muggle school," he said, looking aside at Rhys. "Not for long, and it's been years, but I haven't thought about it in forever."

"All of you guys don't, right?" Rhys asked. Matthew had never mentioned it, and however secretive Matthew was being about things like this Rhys thought he would have said something about going to a muggle school. "There's not much else on this floor, we can go up if you want," he added, gesturing toward the ceiling.

Dare gave one last look around, then nodded and backed out of the room. "There's no school for wizarding kids under ten," he said, starting to explain once they were completely alone again. "But kids with Muggle parents, or kids who don't show any magical abilities sometimes get sent to Muggle schools. Mine thought it'd be better if I was well-rounded or something, but a few years in I got pulled and home-schooled too."

"There are really kids born that don't have it?" Rhys asked. He wondered if they were ostracized anything like he had been by his parents and community. Was it harder for a nonmagical kid to adjust to living in the magical world than it was for him to? He couldn't imagine the feelings of being messed up it could bring.

"It's rare," Dare admitted. "Non-magical people with magical parents are called Squibs. I've never met one, but my friend in New York, he's got a friend who's a Squib. Went to high school, got a job at Starbucks™ and everything." Dare couldn't begin to imagine life without magic. It took him that long to remember that apparently his mother had been a Squib, though she'd never known it.

"You have a friend in New York? Where in the States are you from?" Rhys asked. He had been a couple of times, though never with the time or opportunity to explore the country. Perhaps a trip was in order, experiences were always good to add to. He would have to bring up the idea of travel to Matthew.

"Southern California," Dare said. "Los Angeles, around Venice Beach. But my friend Markise and his sister went to the same school because their parents couldn't afford one that was closer." This whole conversation was a trip through memories, and it almost didn't feel real anymore. Had he ever really been that unselfconscious?

"I never made it over to that side of the country," Rhys said. "I'd like to, though. How many of your schools does America have?" He knew that apparently the UK had a decent handful of them, but with America's much larger size he could only imagine the sheer number the country must have.
