"That's good," Keith said. "Did you live in Diagon Alley, then? Before moving to the castle?" He assumed so, since it wouldn't make much sense to have to travel so far to get to Michael's shop, but Dare had graduated after Michael, right? Diagon Alley was quite the trip from Hogwarts. It was a big change from living in Diagon Alley, there was so much more room here.

"Yeah," Dare said, turning from Elouai as she shook her thick coat, splattering water all around her. He was glad to discover he was out of range. "We lived in an apartment over the pet shop. Things were hell at school when the Prophet outed us, and it was just safer to stay out of it. It's calmed down a hell of a lot, though. The Headmistress was openly supportive, and that helped."

"At least you had somewhere to go to get away from it," Keith said, turning his head away from the flying water, though none of it quite reached him. "You said the Prophet outed you?" He couldn't say he had known that particular detail. That wasn't right at all, it was something that should never be forced on someone. How had the woman managed to do something like that?

"Yes," Dare said flatly. "We'd been together like three months when it showed up at the top of the gossip column. It wasn't Dahlia writing then, but Gaby was just as bad. So much sh~ hit the fan, we couldn't stay in our dorms anymore." He didn't go into any more detail than that. It wasn't necessary. Instead, he turned his attention to Elouai, who waited with thudding tail for the spell that would dry her and send the occasional breeze across her face.

"That's bull," Keith said, shaking his head. His eyebrows came together as he considered it. "I know I got off lucky at my school, I got some slack, but I didn't get the spells like some did." He didn't know how he had managed to get off easy, but he was glad he hadn't had to deal with it all. "At least you have the headmistress at your back."

Dare nodded, and though his jaw tightened, he said nothing about the spells he'd endured. It hadn't lasted long, he reminded himself, and it was long over now. "The headmistress is amazing," he said simply.
He pulled a deep breath and stood, his hand reflexively reaching for the back of Elouai's collar. He didn't have any worries about her trying to get away, but it made others more comfortable, so the habit remained. "Come here," he said, gesturing to Keith. Elouai's tongue lolled from her brief adventure, and her heavy tail swished, brushing the bits of grass that were finally coming up.
"He's safe," he told her. She didn't need the words, not with how good she was getting at reading people and judging his and Michael's reactions to things, but he did it anyway.

Keith came and pulled his hands from his pockets to reach out a gentle hand to the dog. He had a brief thought of getting a pet for himself now that he thought he was going to be here for good, but his plants would be more than enough responsibility for him to deal with over the coming months. "Hello there," he said in a low voice. "You're a beautiful girl."
