Michael shot a look at the captain at the sound of his name again. It was still strange, though he was thinking it now. He went around his desk and pulled out the old sets and laid them out on the desk. "We are headed for port," he said. "There is no reason to stop another ship with ours weighted as it is with your wonderful cargo."

The Captain arched one dark brow at the pirate. "Touché," he said. It was truly a shame that the man hadn't a drop of humor in his body. He had hoped to make his captivity more entertaining with any number of the light jokes he had come up with, but to no avail. At the least, the pirate had not slit his throat for the attempts. He was very near giving up for lost and setting himself toward simply surviving.
Before long, he was focused on the chess board, selecting his pieces and setting them out with the fluidness of years of practice. His repeated use of the pirate's given name seemed to keep the man unsettled, but he had yet to see any real signs of humanity. If this was an odd way to pass his time, he didn't think of it as such. He happened to have human company, so why not make the most of it?
"I was just thinking about that port," he said, nudging a pawn into place. "I'd love some. I prefer brandy, but a good red wine will suffice. And here I thought you'd lost all your manners and would never ask." He raised his eyes from the board to meet those of the pirate.

Michael found a smile pulling at his lips as he moved his own piece before standing. "I don't normally share a drink with prisoners," he pointed out even as he pulled out a bottle and a couple of glasses. Yet more old belongings, as most commonly drinks were had in metal or wooden cups. He never played games with prisoners, either.

"As I am not normally a prisoner Michael, I believe this will be a first for us both," the Captain said. He watched the pirate, struck by that odd smile. Where had it come from? What had he done differently this time to have gotten such a reaction? He paused in thought a moment before diverting his attention back to the chess board and making his move.
