A shadow crept through the night, darkness among darkness, quieter than a falling leaf. Even the glint of moss-green eyes was invisible to the sight of mortal eyes. Dare. The voice whispered through his mind, a vivid memory that set his heart beating. Avenge me.
They were his brother's dying words and ones that resonated through him as he climbed the rigging of the ship. His brother, who had died of heartache over a wench the pirate had stolen. Lady Druscilla Grace had been all but betrothed to his brother, then swept away to sea. He would seek vengeance. The pirate would pay.

The pirate captain stood at the helm, a light wind billowing the sails and ruffling his roguish curls. Beringed fingers curved around the spokes of the wheel as he scanned the deck, his men mostly unconscious for the night, sleeping, drunk, or simply knocked down and unable to get up from their last brawl. The crew was a bloodthirsty lot that didn't take kindly to disturbances, however small.
He knew his ship like a lover, knew the sea as he knew himself, and something was in the wind. Something that could neither be heard nor seen, but felt. He stood as though he hadn't a care in the world, but he was waiting, and one hand dropped casually to rest beside the scabbard at his hip.

Dare slipped over the side of the ship, his feet landing silently on the deck. He had trained hard at ninja school and gotten his degree in shiruken-throwing for this momentous occasion. He crept toward the pirate, his heartbeat softening and breaths shallowing as he approached. He slid his katana free, less than a whisper on the wind, and with a single graceful motion, moved to slice the pirate's throat.

The pirate's sword was drawn before the blade of the katana could pass the wide brim of his hat. His heavy cutlass rose in an arc, blocking the katana's blade and tearing it in two. He turned, heeled boots scraping the highly polished wood beneath them. His eyes burned like twin flames, and his very recklessness urged him on. Half a step and he threw his head forward into that of the shadowy figure before him.

Dare was too quick to be caught by such a move. The handle of his sword clattered forgotten to the deck but already his wakizashi was drawn, the shōtō blade merely a flash in the moonlight. It was a tool to destroy defeated enemies, but he had yet to fell the mad pirate and even as he danced out of reach, a pair of nunchaku appeared in his hand. He darted behind the pirate and swung to strike.

The pirate would not call for his men, nor would he play by any rules. He fell to a squat, his leg kicking out as he spun to knock his invisible opponent to the ground. A war cry spilled from his lips, a grunt of the very effort he put into the motion. He fought as much for the thrill as for survival. "Give it up, matey!" he called. "You be no match for Firebrand!"

Dare had jumped that kick and crouched some few feet away now, poised for the kill. He spoke not a word from behind his mask but looked up at the man he sought to destroy. "あなたの罪の、不信心支払をする!" he hissed at last. "女性を解放すれば私はあなたの無益な精神倹約するかもしれない。" A likely story.

If not for the captioning, the pirate never would have understood the ninja's threat, nor his ridiculous request. His lips parted to a booming laugh, one that echoed across the ebony waters. "The woman came to me," he taunted. "She came in her pajamas as you did, then removed them for my pleasure!" His cutlass stood steady as he peered into the shadows, looking for his adversary. "Show yourself, coward! Who are you?!"

"I am no coward!" Dare hissed. From the shadows came a high pitched sound, one hardly audible even with the sudden still of the water. A shiruken whizzed from nowhere, then another and another, straight toward the insolent pirate who thought so highly of his charms. "You think yourself a king, but you are nothing!"

The pirate dodged star after star, but alas! One fixed itself firmly in his high leather boot. He swore like a sailor (literally, as the case was), then reached down and plucked the bit of metal free. Pain meant nothing to a pirate, who faced death with every waking moment and every moment that his eyes were closed and another's were not. "If you are no coward, then take off your pajamas so that I may see you!" He tossed the bloodstained star back into the shadows.

"それらはパジャマではない!" Dare hissed. "そして私は露出している私に会いたいと思うことを賭けた!" He knew the pirate's preferences, and Firebrand liked wenches. There was nothing wenchlike about him, with his large hands and complete lack of feminine attributes. The pirate was attempting to shock him, and he would not be shocked, most especially since electricity had not yet been discovered.

"There is a striking lack of wenches on this ship!" Firebrand pointed out. "The wench you so valiantly seek is a strong, independent wench of the seventeenth century and has forged on with her own crew! And not a man on this ship has seen fresh water in months. If you have bathed, which by your lack of stench I can tell that you have, then you are the most desireable creature on this ship!"

It should have been impossible to surprise a ninja, but somehow Firebrand had done so. "いかに飲まれるか。" he asked. "私がここに殺すこといることを意識するか。" He picked up his bloodied ninja star and tucked it away, then began to move silently around the pirate. He would simply have to try another method. As a ninja, he had infinite ways to kill someone.

"Will you just dispense with the captions?" Firebrand asked, exasperated. "They take precious time that we could be killing one another!" Or seducing one another, he thought, his lips curving wickedly. "Come to my cabin, my mysterious adversary. Let us discuss this as gentlemen. I give you my word as a pirate."

"A pirate's word means nothing!" Dare hissed. "But I will join you, if only to move this plot along. Besides, our readers grow weary of purposeless dialog! They wish to see your blood spilled for the mop boy to clean up in the morning! They wish to see your roguish curls matted with it and my shadow slipping back into the night unnoticed!"
