"Yeah. I was also there when you nearly got expelled for that bloody duel!" Vannah said, which made it even more unreasonable that he would be promoted to Deputy Headmaster. Wasn't that position held for people who had strong leadership skills, respect for others, and respect for themselves? Deputy Headmaster and Chase didn't belong together. But it was what it was. And apparently it also meant Vannah would be sitting in detention for a week. Why the hell not? It's not like she had anything better to do. Maybe she could get a good nap in there. She wasn't serious about the Emilian thing. She hoped he rot in hell. "Is...is he still around?" Vannah asked, her curiosity making her forget her temper for a moment.

Chase had his retort ready when Vannah asked about Emilian, and the question sobered him a bit. He tightened his jaw, then gave a sharp nod. "He never left," he said. "He moved into that bloody jewelry store and just stayed. Girls were all over him like he was some challenge until that interview in the Daily Prophet and now he's engaged." That was a shocker he still couldn't believe. Adara was so smart! So sweet, and she was with that?

The color in Vannah's cheeks drained immediately and she dropped the focus of her hollow eyes to the Forest floor. "Oh." She said meekly. She had hoped that maybe Emilian had spontaneously combusted into a million burning flames on his brusque early morning walk through Hogsmeade. She sighed. "I'm going to get on, I suppose." She said turning away sharply. Her mood had suddenly taken a sharp turn downward into that haziness she had been walking around in for years. When will it end? Her want to be alone now turned into a need. She lifted a hand up. She would see him around, probably in detention.

Chase let out a heavy breath, then stepped forward, bypassing propriety to catch Vannah's wrist. "Don't let him win," he said. Emilian was a worthless bastard, and he couldn't stand seeing that the jerk's mark was still so strong. He would have killed him, almost had killed him, and he wasn't even entirely sure what had stopped him from going through with it.

Vannah stopped suddenly, but it wasn't really like she had any choice at that point. It was like deja vu hearing those words. She had heard so many variations of it, but it hadn't changed anything. Emilian had won. He got what he wanted and there wasn't anything she could do to get it back. Instead of answering him, she looked down at the hand that clutched her wrist. "I told you to get the hell off of me." Her words were as sharp as she said them before, but still she didn't make a move to yank her arm away.

Chase stiffened, then forced himself to release Vannah. What the hell was he doing, anyway? He'd learned forever ago that she didn't want his help. No one wanted his help. No one but the Headmistress, who'd never had any reason to trust him at all. He paused, looking at what he could see of Vannah, then turned to walk away.

Vannah snatched her wrist away and rubbed it. There was a red mark left where he had grabbed her, but when she opened her mouth to complain about it, he was already walking away. She watched him walk off, wondering just how they got there, before turning on her heel and strolling farther away into the Forest. Screw him, was the only thought that crossed her mind at the time.
