"Anorexia is not just never eating. Anorexia can be if you are eating, but not enough. Even little bits of food, if it is not enough to sustain you is anorexia. If you eat enough at one meal, but skip another, also can be anorexia. It is a lot more prevalent than you would think."
"You should be eating about four thousand calories a day. That is just to maintain a healthy weight. If you are not eating enough you can get dizzy. That is due to the low blood pressure. If you have not been eating enough for long enough, it can make you sick to eat more. If it had been a long time, we will need to slowly increase your intake, and supplement that with intravenous fluids."

Dare looked up sharply. "I'm not doing Muggle medicine," he said. He didn't even know what intravenous fluids meant, but he could guess and he wanted nothing to do with it. "Anyway, everything says you're supposed to have two thousand. I'm probably getting that..." He didn't actually have any clue how much what he ate was worth, but he didn't want to try to figure it out, either.

"Well, everything is for average people. So two thousand fits closer to what a 5'5, inactive female would eat if she was in her late twenties. You're a 6'2 male, I'd guess moderately active, still young and growing. Men need more than women, the taller you are the more you need. If you're active you need more, and the younger you are the more you need. So, like I said, you should probably be eating about four thousand calories a day."
Katia ran through her mind of what could possibly be considered a muggle medication. "And intravenous fluids are not muggle, at least not all versions. About ten years ago and American healer invented a wizarding version of intravenous fluids. It is like a bubble charm, that holds nutritious fluids against your skin. But it is not a replacement for eating."

"I'm eating!" Dare argued, keeping his voice low despite his annoyance. "I don't know how much I'm eating, but what am I supposed to do, stuff myself?" He didn't want to be here. He wished he'd gone to see Kane instead, he'd have been told to get out more and stress less, and he could be home already. His gaze jumped back up to Professor Medina's, worried now. "Do I have to stay here?"

Normally Katia would say no, because normally the students knew what they were doing. In a normal case she'd give them the fluids and set up an appointment with Kane. In Dare's case it appeared as though he was not aware. “I am afraid that I need to keep you at least twenty-four hours, for observation. I will administer the fluids, we'll get you some sleep. Then I will check on you in the morning. Is there someone you need to send a note to. A professor I can notify you will be in here?”

Dare gaped. "Seriously?" No, she wasn't supposed to tell him he had to stay! She was supposed to just send him home with instructions! He straightened, though it didn't have an intimidation factor sitting on a hospital bed with his hair over his face. "I can't sleep here! I've got a husband and a dog to go home to! Michael's graduated! We don't even live on campus!" And they couldn't leave Elouai at home if Michael was allowed in. Would Michael even be allowed in, or would he just get a note?

Katia nodded, although she wondered at being married so young. He was a man. Sexuality aside, Spain was alright with same sex couples, he was so young. Men didn't have to get married young, they were the holders of titles, they were the heirs. “I'm sure your husband will want to make sure you're safe. Why don't we send him an owl. If he thinks you don't need to be here he can sign a release for you.” As for the dog, while she had her own, and if it came to her own health or the dog's emotional health, it might be a hard choice, but in the end she would have to choose her own health.

Dare's eyes widened. "A release? I'm eighteen, I'm an adult." Why would Michael's opinion on whether he needed to be here trump his, or even the nurse's? He sighed heavily and dropped his head forward, brows drawing tightly together. "Michael Blackwood-Hardt," he said. "Diagon Alley."

The shock on Dare's face was clear enough, but it couldn't be helped. "In some cases I have the power to keep you here, without your permission. In that case your only I, after a consultation with the counselor, or your next of kin is allowed to release you." In cases like anorexia, where the patient might not be in full capacity of their mental facilities, where they might not be making the best decisions, then medical staff could intervene. That Dare seemed so liaise fair about this was what worried her. With the results of her diagnostics and what he'd told her it was much more serious than just stress.

At least Michael counted as his next of kin. Dare still wasn't happy about this, but he didn't have an argument to that. Not until the counselor part caught up with him. He looked up again. "I have to see Kane too?" he asked. "It's just stress, right? Shouldn't I be just like, getting out more? Exercise more and get some sun or something?" Suddenly he wanted Michael here. Maybe he could talk some sense into her.

Katia pursed her lips. "I wish it were that simple. But there is a reason that you let yourself get to this point. You are lucky your teeth are not falling out and you are not going bald. If nothing else you have to go see Kane to talk about the process of coming back from anorexia. I can check you out, but he will know more about the psychology behind the disease. Is it all right if I start you on the intravenous fluids? Or do you want to wait for your husband?"
She sent a hastily scrawled message off to Dare's husband Michael in Diagon Alley, saying he was needed in the hospital wing for his husband.

Dare's eyes widened. "Seriously? You think I'm anorexic? I'm not trying to starve myself!" Was she crazy? "I get enough water, I don't need fluids, I'd rather wait for Michael!" Was she even listening to anything he said? You are lucky your teeth are not falling out... He brushed his teeth. How could not sleeping and not eating that much make his teeth fall out?

Michael hadn't expected an owl, he had expected Dare to come home and tell him what the nurse had said. An owl made it seem like it was a lot worse than he thought it was. Sure, he had noticed Dare's weight loss, but he had been just as bad, if not worse, this time last year. The note hadn't even given any information, was it really that serious? If it wasn't, then why would he need to go up there?
He didn't even consider not coming, only sent a return owl to tell that he would be there as soon as possible. It only took a few minutes to close down the shop and usher out the last customer, a lady whose eyes had gone wide at the words family emergency and promised to come back some other day. He had thought for a moment about Elouai, but he figured she would be okay, if cramped, at the bottom of the stairs in the entry way.
After setting out just enough food for her and a replenishing water bowl, he strengthened the invisible outer fence so that she could get out if she needed without him having to worry about her running loose. Then, he left, appearing at the school gates just a handful of minutes after receiving the owl. He came into the hospital wing just a few minutes after that, his eyes searching the room before hovering on Dare, his expression worried.

Looking down at her notes for a moment, not wanting to argue with Dare, she almost missed Michael coming in. Michael she remembered Eros introducing to her at the dinner party. How had she forgotten Dare? Probably because he was a student and she truly dreaded forming any attachment to a student that they could exploit, or that she would miss.
"Michael? Please take a seat. Dare wanted me to call you in, to talk about his staying for observation. I am afraid that Dare is suffering from anorexia. I can tell you why, feel free to ask questions." She had all night. If she was watching a student she wouldn't be visiting any other teachers or finding something entertaining to do this evening.

Dare gaped, as though Professor Medina hadn't said it a few times already. "I'm not trying to starve myself!" he argued. "I came in because I'm not gaining weight!" Didn't that go against anorexia? He was worried about the weight and he made himself eat, so that was ridiculous! "I'm fine, Michael," he said, assuring them both.
