"We're working on it now," Kane pointed out. "If we could get you even a few more hours a couple times a week, it'd probably help both of you out. Just to break up the routine a little so the days don't seem like such a chore. Is it plausible to cut down on your hours at all? Take a night off during the week?"

"If I did, I'd just be coming home to do my homework with Michael instead of at the club and we'd be out that much more money," Dare said, aggravated that he had to spell all this out. "Michael's already borrowing money from his shop so we can have the ceremony we want and he's gonna pay it back with his graduation money from his mom, and I haven't even spent any of my money because I'm trying to buy a piano! I can't take nights off or cut out early, I work at a nightclub and it's not like I work all that much anyway, just a few hours a night. So try something else." Dare glared at Kane from behind a thick fringe, then started chewing on his lip ring again.

So money was a definite stressor. Kane inclined his head slightly in acknowledgment as he went over what he knew. Dare had said he wanted to sell art, but what could he do? Kane himself knew little about art or the process of selling it, but he knew people. "You said you were interested in selling your work. Do you know any established artists? If you took one of your Saturdays, you might be able to find a museum or artists' group. That'd give you an edge toward selling your work. You might also find some competitions to join. Have you entered any competitions?"

Dare's previous arguments died, and he stared at Kane, wondering how in hell none of that had ever even occurred to him. He'd never thought of there being artists' groups outside the drawing club at school, where no one had really known any more than he did. He'd never thought of competitions, either. Did museums have competitions?
"No," he told Kane, "I haven't." He was going to, though. And he was telling Michael as soon as he got home tonight. "So, like, is there anything I can do now?" He never in a hundred years would have thought a school counselor would have ideas on selling his art.

Finally, he'd found something that might work. Kane thought for a moment. "For selling your art, I think those would be the best bets for now. You might look into whether a library or book store would carry a book on selling art." He didn't know what else he could contribute to that particular subject, so he went back and caught up something that hadn't been resolved. "Going back to your schedule..." Kane made as many workable suggestions as he could come up with regarding ways to change things up, things to do that might break up the routine. He suggested that Dare meet with him again after the meeting with Michael to see if they could brainstorm anything else together, and to follow up with Dare looking into selling.

Dare agreed to another meeting, if only to see if Kane could come up with more ideas in the meantime. He left half-stunned at the thought that he might actually be able to do something instead of just thinking about it.
