Ariel sighed heavily and shook his head. "I don't know," he mumbled into his knees. He had exams that he needed to study for, but really he wasn't too worried about most of them considering his grades through the year. He just had to stay out of trouble until exams were over and they could leave. Surely he could manage that.

"I could escort you everyplace like I did with Dare," Markise threw out. He didn't trust Ariel not to slip out sometime to smoke or whore or get high or whatever. He hoped he'd be able to trust Ariel once they were in New York. Maybe Ariel would stay close then.

Ariel turned his head to look at Markise, though he still let it rest on his knees. "What?" He didn't intend to go out on the weekends looking for drugs, mainly because he didn't have the money for them, but also because he really didn't want to go through all this again. And in his room he only had one box of cigarettes.

Markise realized what he'd said when he looked at Ariel again. "He was having... problems," he said, "So me and Michael made sure he didn't get off somewhere to buy anything." It wasn't Ariel's business what it was that they hadn't wanted Dare to buy. "If you're coming with me, I have to know you won't... you know what I mean." He had to know that Ariel was done, and he couldn't take his word for it.

"So you want to follow me around?" Ariel asked, raising an eyebrow. He stared at Markise for a second and then shook his head before closing his eyes. "It's fine, whatever you have to do." He turned his head to rest his forehead on his knees again, telling himself that he didn't need to tell Markise about the little thin black box in his drawer in the dorm.

It felt so wrong hearing it like that. So you want to follow me around? "I just... I want to make sure it doesn't happen again, and if it keeps you from being tempted it's worth it, right? Being with me so I know..." He shook his head and tried to rephrase, tried not to say so I know you're okay. "I mean, if we're going to spend the summer together, right?" That was better. They needed to get used to talking without arguing so they could survive a summer together.

Ariel picked his head up and nodded, "I know," he said softly. "I'm sorry, it's completely logical for you to want to do that," he said, "I'm just...." He closed his eyes again and rested his head on his knees. "A lot's happened today." Well...over the past couple of days. And he still hurt, he had just found some way to momentarily push it down into some kind of manageable pulsing instead of the horrible waves that had bombarded him before. He was sure that as soon as he didn't have anything else to concentrate on it would all come back.

Markise nodded, and he was silent for some moments. Then he looked at the watch he'd put on for today. "There's not much time left on the polyjuice potion," he said, though he wasn't entirely sure why. Would it make any difference? Would it change anything? "If your brother's not coming back..." He could be himself again. Would it help?

Ariel shook his head, "He won't come back." It took him some moments before he realized what Markise meant and he opened his eyes to look at him. "I'm sorry I was so mean about that idea before," he said after another few seconds. "But I think it's too late to go get you that tattoo." He even tried for a little smile when he said that.

Markise saw that attempt at a smile and melted even more. His borrowed lips curved gently for a moment before he looked down slightly and it faded. "It was a stupid idea anyway," he said. Besides, he was getting out that desire to try on some of the other clothes he'd made now, right? "And I decided not to get the tattoo." He lifted his eyes and his left wrist, showing a too-large white gold men's bracelet there. It was strange seeing it slide around like that. "This reminds me," he said. "I guess that's enough."

"It reminds you?" Ariel asked as his eyes hovered on the bracelet. After a few moments of examination his eyes moved up to Markise's face. He didn't know why Markise had wanted the tattoo in the first place, but if the bracelet was enough for him, he wasn't going to argue. The majority of the ones he had himself didn't mean much at all, mostly just passing likes and things his brother had said would look good added to the overall design.

Markise nodded, then looked away, a little embarrassed at the importance he gave that slender piece of metal. "It reminds me I'm worth something, that I don't have to settle. It reminds me someone cares." Dare. And yet he had no problem with leaving Dare at all. But then, after what he'd done, he'd just wanted to escape.

Ariel bit back everything he wanted to say to that. You're worth a lot more than you think you are. More people care about you than you think. Instead, he nodded and closed his eyes again. "Are you going to get more potion, or change or something?" he asked, though he wondered how much longer the nurses would tolerate Markise's, or Angel's presence.

"I brought some with me, so I can last for a while, but if he's gone, I might as well be me, right?" He thought a moment. There was no way these clothes would fit him if he changed back. This girl had a tiny waist, and even Brindle's shoes were tiny. "I can stay until they kick me out again if you want, then go change," he suggested. "Or I could let you sleep." Ariel had been like that, with his head down and his eyes closed, long enough now that Markise wondered if he'd slept at all either. Probably not.

Ariel sighed softly and tightened his arms around his legs. He didn't want Markise to go, even with all the plans made he was afraid that Markise wouldn't come back. It was a ridiculous fear, but one that was formed in his mind and refused to leave. "I should probably try to sleep," he said softly, forcing himself to choose the best option for his own health.
