"Isn't the piano one of the most universal things? From what I've heard, once a person can play those then they can do almost everything. Very similiar to the speaking of Spanish, French, and Italian I think. I could be wrong about that though." Melody stopped herself from the rambling. Rambling was defintely up there with bad first impressions and being a klutz for her. In her defense though, she couldn't help it. Back at her home schooling her mother had taught her things beyond the magic educational requirements which included little tidbits of information of different languages, and some random muggle facts.

She nodded her head, Melody was partially right, but there was more to music then that. "Yes, but can you say the same for a brass instrument? Using your lips and your fingers are two very different things. Although you would understand the sounds, it wouldn't be easy to understand the positioning of a instrument." when it came to music, Rayne knew so much.
As a child, she was always called a musical prodigy. Thinking back on it she mentally rolled her eyes. She didn't believe in prodigy's, no one could pick up an instrument and play a perfect scale the first time. "But you are right, if you can understand the piano, you can understand all major and minor scales of any instruments only if you nail the keys first." Rayne's hand loosened on the bow, she knew that tensing her fingers around it could really ruin a sound, everything came to down to how gently you could pull the strings with your bow. The least amount of pressure without the sound being faint.

It seemed as if everytime Rayne opened her mouth and another interesting thing was said, Melody understood music more and more. Although she was still far from ever actually pickig up something to play, she was understanding the small dynamics of it.
"I might be wrong in saying this but isn't the piano good for singing? By playing the notes, you could use it as a warm up to get your own voice to hit the sounds?" It came out sounding like a question instead of a follow-up to her main inquiry. She could faintly remember someone telling her that a while ago and yet couldn't place the memory.

She nodded once again. Rayne was all too familiar with this. She had, on many occasions, used the piano as a way to train her voice into recognizing notes. "That's exactly right, Piano's are very useful, most modern day singers have to know at least where the notes are on a piano and they get by." this girl seemed to know a lot, ironic that she was named Melody. Rayne felt that Melody would make a great musician, she wondered if she had ever tried, but wouldn't ask. That would come out on it's own eventually.

"Ok, that's what I thought. I was just confirming. I think someone told that to me a while ago. I don't really remember though." Melody took a long lock of hair in her fingers and twirled it as she looked out at the lake. The part of her memory that she tried to shut out wanted to break down the barrier. But she still kept it restrained. It wasn't her fault that she couldn't remember small facts and details that well anymore, it happened to many people. She could recall major events that had meaning to them, but it seemed as if the less important things were slowly leaving her. Wrinkling her brow, Melody scolded herself and told her that she wasn't going to think about it.
"So, uh...Do you do other things beside playing music?" Melody said the first question she could think of to distract herself. The last thing she wanted was to be asked what she was thinking about. As a hufflepuff, she assumed that her emotions sometimes showed through on her face.

Rayne shrugged, she did, but only because it was a part of her culture, and because she thoroughly enjoyed sparring with her brother. Not that she would admit it to him, she usually pretends to be bored. "Yes, but nothing interesting really. My heritage revolves around samurai's and forms of martial arts." she shrugged it of, it wasn't something she really talked about. She preferred to just, play her music, but when loads of stress was piled onto her shoulders, she had always taken a great pleasure in sparring.

Melody blinked realizing that Rayne was of Asian decent. Now, looking closer she wondered how she had missed that. So her observing skills needed a bit sharpening up apparently. She blamed on being home schooled though, when there and seeing the same people and same things everyday her senses dulled out faintly.
"That's neat. I used to know a guy who loved learning about martial arts. But then again, everything interested him. He woud try anything if it meant learning more about it." Melody smiled thinking about that kid. He was two years younger than she was and always a member of her home schooling unit. He would come over every wednesday to take part in the lesson of the day. A stab of home sickness hit Melody and for a minute the feeling of needing to go back there settled in. She had to quickly remind herself that she was here at public school now. She couldn't go back.

She shrugged, it wasn't a big deal for her. In Japan, it was very common. Rayne looked at Melody with questioning eyes then looked towards the castle. "What do you mean by 'used to'? he's not in this school anymore." Rayne knew absolutely no one, maybe Melody could shed some light on Hogwarts for her. Being a foreign students, learning the customs of Hogwarts was hard for her, especially when it came to the smaller things, like the tone they spoke, the body language. People made it so obvious as to what they were thinking, what they were feeling.

"Um, well I was home schooled up until last week. He was one of the kids that would come once a week to learn about the lesson of the day." Her answer was short and to the point. She had transferred here not too long ago and was still resisting the urge to leave. The less said about her life away from here the better. Or at least, that's what she had convinced herself.

Rayne was glad Melody wasn't the type who said much. Her quick answer pleased Rayne, herself being a person who preferred silence over needless bantering. "So you are not originally a Hogwarts student. Yet you are... European?" it confused Rayne a bit, in Japan, there was no home schooling. It was a rare thing and not many did it. Mostly because their customs revolved around interaction, one of the main reasons why so many festivals are held back in Japan.

"No, not a Hogwarts original and my mother was from Ireland and my dad from London but I was actually born in America. So, I never quite know if I'm European or not. Just mixed I guess." Melody shrugged. She had always been content with being home schooled rather than public. In a way she liked it better, of course now she had no choice. She had asked once why she was home schooled and her mother had answered. Melody, of course, couldn't exactly remember the answer though. She figured she could ask her dad if she really wanted to know.

She nodded her head, still confused, but she wouldn't ask anymore. Instead she dropped her gaze to her bow. Her fingers itching to play, but it could wait. her mother always said it was rude to play, unless the person asks or if she is performing. "What interests do you have?" Rayne had been speaking of only herself, she wasn't one who really needed to know about others, but it would be rude not to ask, she would allow melody the joy of talking about something she loved.

"I write a little and I used to be big into painting. That's mainly it." Melody knew she was somewhat of a boring person but it had been so long since she had done anything besides school work and cleaning up her messes.
When Rayne looked down at her bow it occured to Melody that Rayne probably wanted to play some more. "You can play if you want, it's amazing to listen to," She suggested. It would be a good way to keep questions off of her for a bit, plus she did like the sound the instrument made.

"I can barely draw a circle." she mused, some people were so amazing at drawing it baffled Rayne, she wondered how they did it.
When Melody had realized Rayne wanted to play, Rayne nodded and placed her bow gently on the strings. "Thank you." she said smiling slightly to Melody before returning to her instrument.
She quickly tested it and played the 'A' note. Satisfied, she began playing a very upbeat, but low tempo. The song was a story to Rayne. One that spoke of anger, fear and confusion. She hadn't noticed that she was humming along, only aware of her music and the lyrics forming in her mind.

Melody listened closly. She heard the tempo and the moods the music seeme to portray. She carefuly watched how Rayne moved the bow across the strings and created different sounds. Whether higher or lower, each sound made a note as beautiful as the next. As cheesy as it sounded to her, Melody could picture this as a painting. For every sharp high note would come a red. Each lower softer note was a purple and the faster notes would be in the yellow or green family. In a way, Melody wanted to go off and actually paint this picture she saw in her mind but sadly realized her paints still stood in the basement of her home.
