Michael didn't even remember Dare liking the idea of talking to him about the dreams, the conversation had lasted only a few minutes, he couldn't imagine Dare being any more open with Kane. But Kane had helped him, hadn't he? He and Dare were different, though. "I don't know if he would do that," he said, closing his eyes and dropping his head. Some part of him was still hoping that he wouldn't have to talk to Dare about it.

Markise's lips pressed tightly together at Michael's continued refusal to do anything. His pale eyes sparked with anger. "Fine," he snapped, pushing to his feet. "Don't do anything, then." He grabbed his book bag, slinging the strap over his head and under the opposite arm. "You know, I thought you cared about Dare, but apparently you're too stuck on what's easy to actually get off your ass. He's so f~ing lucky to have you." Markise turned to storm off.

Michael's eyes snapped open and he shot a glare at Markise. How could Markise say anything like that? But wasn't some of it truth? He glared hard as he thought. Michael did care about Dare, and while he felt that Dare could find someone better, he felt lucky to have him. "I love Dare," he said softly, anger just below the surface. "I just..." he shook his head and hopped off of the windowsill. How could Markise understand that he couldn't accept that Dare had bad things going on in his life, that he wanted Dare to be fine?

Markise turned back toward Michael, eyes narrowed. "You just what? Love is wanting what's best for someone, even if it tears your f~ing heart out to do it. And you don't want to talk to Dare why? Cause he'll be upset? I'd do it myself, but I already tried!" Markise was furious. He'd spent months trying to convince himself that Dare was happy and Michael was what was best for him, and now he wondered what in hell it was that Michael did for Dare.

Michael looked away, a large part of him insisting that Markise didn't know what he was talking about and to just ignore him. "Everyone has their way of dealing with things, who am I to take away something that works?" he asked, even if the little voice worming its way through his mind was beginning to convince him to listen to Markise again. "Besides, it's better for him to take a sip of potion than to have to deal with being woken up in the middle of the night by..." he trailed off again, closing his eyes as he remembered the night Dare had screamed him awake.

Markise gave a derisive ugh. "You don't know him at all, do you? When Dare gets hooked on something, he holds onto it whether it deserves it or not." Amber, for example. He'd been with her six miserable months and most of that it had been obvious to everyone else that she only had one redeeming quality. "You might think about that while you're pretending he doesn't have a problem." Markise made to leave again.

"Maybe it's not a problem! You wouldn't tell someone in constant pain they couldn't take a pain potion, would you?" Michael shot back, turning to Markise. He had the nagging feeling that Markise was talking about him as the thing that didn't deserve Dare, but he had no argument for that. Michael shook that thought away. Dare didn't have a problem, if he had a problem, then Michael would have seen some change in him, but there was nothing.

Markise growled in frustration. "No, no problem at all! Have you seen him take that potion?" he demanded, turning halfway back toward Michael. "I saw him once and I knew something was wrong! I can't believe he's marrying you! You don't even pay attention!" This time Markise didn't wait for a response, but took off, trying desperately to back himself down from the thoughts that were trying to work their way out again. What was wrong with him? He'd kept quiet for years!

Michael glared hard for a second before he moved after Markise and grabbed his arm. "You're not around him like I am! Seeing one example isn't enough to say he has a problem!" he said, gripping Markise's arm tighter than necessary. "Just because you made a decision based on one time doesn't mean I don't pay attention to him." Maybe he was just trying to convince himself that he wasn't as bad a fiance as Markise was beginning to convince him he was, but he didn't see it as a problem, couldn't let himself see it as a problem.

Markise's lips parted in shock at that hand against his arm, then he grimaced at the pain. He gave one hard tug, as though he really thought he'd just pull free, and his voice lost all its softness, lowering to the distinctly masculine. "Let me go!" He glared as fiercely as he could up at Michael. "Just because you're in denial doesn't mean nothing's happening. Don't blame me for pointing out the obvious!" If this kept up, he would use Ariel's zapping spell.

"You have no business telling me how to deal with Dare," Michael said, pushing Markise away as he released his arm. "It's not your place to watch after him, it's mine." He matched Markise's glare, even surpassed it, however odd it was to see Markise looking like that. He couldn't back down from Markise, he had Dare, there was nothing Markise could do about it. Michael refused to listen to what Markise had said about not deserving him.

Ow, Markise thought, still glaring at Michael as he reached up to rub at his arm. "You're doing a piss-poor job of watching after him!" he countered. He should have been afraid, and part of him was terrified of that look in Michael's eyes, but the rest of him thrilled at finally having gotten something other than hopeless sighing. "Grow some f~ing balls and talk to him if you care so damn much!"

"The last time we talked and he hadn't had his potion we had a fight!" Michael said, largely without thinking. He remembered that night, remembered how he had promised himself they could talk about it the next morning. But Dare had already pushed it away and pretended it hadn't happened when he tried to bring it up again. "And you can't say that I'm doing a horrible job of watching after Dare, if it wasn't for me he would have died a month and a half ago!"

Yeah, because of your father! Markise wanted to shout. He kept his lips tightly pressed, but the bit of knowledge he had about why Dare had almost died shone in his eyes, along with fury at Michael for having allowed it. "So he's alive," Markise said, lowering his voice, though it was just as angry, "but what kind of life is it, eh? What about when he gets bad enough he can't hide it anymore? Is a f~ing shell good enough for you? It sure as hell looks like it."

Michael's eyes hardened and he stepped close to Markise. "It's not going to get that bad, he's not bad now," he insisted yet again. "He has an amazing life, the one he wants, with the potions." He was angry with Markise for continuing with it all, it wasn't helping him at all, not with the stress and the insecurities he already had even without Markise saying it.
