The Gilded Raven swept down the steps into the gardens, layered cape fluttering around booted ankles, feathered headdress undulating. Dancing was an undeniably pleasant way to spend the evening, but the cloying heat of the indoors was tiresome. The Raven breathed deeply, eyes closing a moment in near bliss at the soft, sweet smell of night-blooming flowers. Then, capes trailing, the Raven set off down the garden path, absorbing the physical beauty all around.

Jack heard the newcomer and turned to see the dark, ruffling shape come towards him. It was definitely a unique costume, and he looked at it for a minute, his eyes trailing from the feathered headdress to the bottom of the cape. "Now that's an interesting costume," he said lightly, smiling to show he was only teasing, nothing meant to be taken seriously. It was a welcome distraction from his thoughts.

The Raven's head inclined in thanks, then the imposing figure sketched a low bow, straightening to reveal gently laughing eyes behind the gilded mask. "The Gilded Raven, if you please," a purposefully soft, somewhat androgenous voice announced. The Raven settled its wings, letting the cape fall where it would for now. "And you are Captain Jack Sparrow, I presume?"

"At your service," Jack said, grinning and giving a low, sweeping bow. He watched the figure in front of him, trying to figure it out, but it was so thoroughly covered he could barely even earn a hint at its gender. "The dance floor too much, or do you just like the gardens?" he asked, crossing his arms loosely over his body.

"Both," the Raven replied, white-painted lips curving into a hint of a smile. "My wings needed stretching, perhaps. The castle begins to feel like a cage after so long. And you, Captain? At a loss without your Pearl?"

Jack grinned and shrugged, "I was, but I can stand a few hours away from the Pearl when I win dances with beautiful Princesses. It's waiting for me out in the lake," he said, eyes sparkling. He was thankful for having read the book instead of just memorizing the picture or he'd have had no idea what the Raven was talking about.

"You dance, then?" the Raven asked, only the mildest surprise showing in that soft voice. "A jig, perhaps? A country dance?" The Raven's tone was light and playful, entirely secure behind the mask and paint, eyes shining with amusement in the dim glow of the gardens.

"Even a Pirate such as myself can be civilized enough for a waltz," Jack said, "We're not dogs every hour of the day." He couldn't suppress a wink and a grin. "What about you? Or do your wings get in the way?" he asked, humor in his voice. He was still trying to figure out the person in front of him, but the fact that he had no idea didn't bother him too much, he was in good spirits, his earlier thoughts forgotten for the moment.

The Raven's white-painted lips curved into a somewhat crooked half-smile at that. Arms shifted beneath the cloak, the movement creating the appearance of ruffling wings. "A waltz is a little beyond me," the Raven admitted, "but more for lack of teaching than any physical inability."

Jack tilted his head at the crooked smile, wondering, it felt familiar. "Well all you need is a decent teacher," he said, his eyes saying he'd be a willing teacher, if the Raven ever decided to learn. "So how does a Raven dance? Does it spread it's wings and spin around? Flapping a bit and getting feathers everywhere?" He grinned, eyes teasing, but calculating.

The Raven's sudden low chuckle was unstoppable; caught off-guard, the eyes behind the mask gleamed with laughter. "Touche," the Raven said, recalling the comment about jigs and country dances. "The Raven happens to be more graceful than a seagull, actually. Maybe not as highborn as the peacock, but I can hold my own."

Jack laughed lightly, a mental image of the three birds duking it out on the dance floor spanning across his mind, momentarily distracting him from trying to figure out the person in front of him. "Now there's something I'd like to see," he said, his eyes laughing. "Let me find a peacock and a seagull and we'll see if it's true."

The Raven's crooked smile returned at that. "There are peacocks everywhere tonight, so that shouldn't be hard. There are seagulls too, but since they're dressed as peacocks, youll have a harder time finding them." Yes, it was a comment on the students themselves, but the Raven had been unable to resist.

"Well according to the reactions I've gotten, I'm a peacock disguised as a seagull," Jack smiled. And there was the Raven's smile again, familiar, and yet Jack couldn't be sure, couldn't begin to be sure. He uncrossed his arms and settled his thumbs in his sash. "Lower expectations are easier to meet, I suppose," he reasoned, shrugging.

"Probably," the Raven agreed, looking over the pirate captain's costume, his posture so remeniscent of a pirate in relaxation that it was an interesting picture against the backdrop of the garden. "You have one of the better costumes I've seen, seagull or not. Most of the peacocks didn't pay so much attention to details."
