Chase knew he was in too deep. He'd been spending his time off with Dru or alone somewhere trying to behave himself, and it was driving him up the wall. He felt caged, and all the energy, all the effort he'd always spent playing mind games or pursuing female company, was building to a highly uncomfortable level.
Then he'd gotten wind that another guy was around, a predator from the sound of it. The guy had sent the female population into chaos, leaving Chase with nothing. Even the girls he'd been talking to had gone into hiding. Sure, he was with Dru, but his reaction to the other guy was a reflex; he was a threat, and though Chase hadn't even met the guy, he was already thinking of the most effective ways to castrate him.

Vannah had just come from the library. She looked like crap and she felt it as well. Her hair was in a messy bun piled on top of her head and her clothes were oversized and hanging off of her body. She had dark circles under her eyes and her skin was pale. She didn't know who she was more angry with, herself for letting it get this out of control, or Ryan for making her feel worse.

Chase was leaning casually against the wall, but his eyes widened as he recognized Vannah, and his head swung to follow her as she passed him. He pushed away from the wall and moved after her. He was bored, and Vannah was entertainment, if nothing else. "You look like hell," he observed, moving up next to her. His eyes reflexively flickered over her, but he couldn't even make out her body through the clothes she was wearing. "That is Vannah under there, isn't it?" It wasn't a polite greeting, or even a decent one, but in his experience, Vannah didn't do polite.

Vannah rolled her eyes. "Go to hell." She said as she kept her pace steady. So much had gone on and this was not what she needed. First Emilian, then Ryan, and worst of all Chase. Gee, wasn't this day just getting better? Not.

"You'll be saving me a room there?" Chase asked with mock innocence. He kept pace with her effortlessly, his long strides eating up the ground. "Come on, you've got to have something better than that, Vannah. When did you stop loving a good fight?" Her indifference was attracting him the way her attitude never had. It was a reflexive draw toward the mysterious, he was sure.

She stopped dead in her tracks and stard at him, hard. "A long time ago and maybe if you hadn't disappeared off of the face of the earth for the last month, youd've known that." Vannah said heatedly. She wasn't intending to be judgemental, but it just came out.

"And what do you care, anyway?" Chase countered. "So I was off with Dru, I left you and your stupid Hufflepuff alone, you should be happy." God, he could tell she was angry, but she should be furious, shouldn't she? "Don't say you missed me, kitten." Chase's lips curved into a wicked smirk.

"Good. I won't. Because I don't." Okay, maybe that was a lie, just a little one. "He is not my Hufflepuff." Not anymore. If only you had been ten minutes earlier.... "Well I'm glad you and Dru were happy while..." Vannah broke off, leaving the rest to be desired.

Chase crossed his arms over his chest. "While what?" This new Vannah had him thrown completely off-guard. She wasn't playing, wasn't fighting dirty, and he couldn't bring himself to torment her if she wouldn't fight back.

"YOu know what?" Vannah said bitterly. "fork it. Why do you care anyways? Michael's running around out there trying to save your girlfriends' ass and you know nothing about it. Good job, Chase." She said sarcastically.

Chase's eyebrows furrowed, and he straightened as his hands moved to his hips, thumbs tucking into his pockets. "What are you talking about? What's she not telling me?" It stung to think that Vannah knew something about Dru that he didn't. "This better not be a joke, Vannah." Not when he'd been ready to treat her like a human again instead of demonspawn.

"I don't think she knows yet." Vannah defended. Wow, this was very uncharacteristic. She took a deep breath ready to tell him. "There's a new guy around." Her voice started out calm and steady. "And he claims to be an old friend of Michael, but I can tell Michael despises him now. And he's been..." Vannah's voice began to quaver a bit as she tugged on her loose sweatshirt. She decided to end with, "...causing trouble, to lay it out gently." Nothing was ever gentle with her.

"I've heard about the guy," Chase said. He was watching Vannah closely enough to see her tug at her unflattering clothes, and something clicked. His eyes flickered red as they found Vannah's. "What'd he do to you?" Dru could take care of herself. Hell, he'd have thought Vannah could. If this guy could shake Vannah, then it was worse than he'd heard.

Vannah bit her lip. The same feeling thathad stuck with her for the past week had come back. "I swear...I tried to stop him, but he.." She began to shake a little as the recollections came back. "I couldn't...and I got really dizzy, but I swear I tried to stop him." She said with a hint of desperation in her voice. "And then...he said he'd come back, but...oh god I hope not..."

Chase swore violently under his breath, and his eyes flickered pure red for one stark moment before settling at a seething crimson rimmed in near-black. He looked at Vannah, some part of him searching wildly for a lie and not finding it. "I'll kill him." It was that simple. "Where is he? Where does he hang out?" Yes, this was about Vannah, but it was also about Dru. It was about Storm and Lafra, every girl he hadn't pushed that far.
